I created MUSE Magazine for an audience of creatives from any discipline who are searching for the creative spark. The magazine features stories and interviews about inspiring musicians across genres, as well as the sources of their own inspiration.
Each issue of MUSE features illustration that is inspired by its featured artists. For this issue I used Photoshop brushes to create illustrated portraits for over half the articles.
One of the biggest challenges I faced in creating this magazine was to solve layouts for a wide variety of content. I unified articles that included snippets of advice and recommendations by adding vector illustrations to backgrounds, created in Illustrator.
To reinforce my message that creative inspiration can come from all kinds of media, I had to find rich imagery that could speak for itself.
Textures and patterns were vital for conveying the character and tone of each artist. Ravi Shankar, for example, is framed by a background inspired by a Grateful Dead poster and reminiscent of Indian tapestries.
To complete the project, I designed a website that could host articles and sell merchandise. It would also promote other functions of MUSE such as after school programs, to round out my concept of the brand.
