El Mateo Loco—Special Edition Beer Label
Every year, Scuttlebutt Brewing Co. works with the Seattle Central Creative Academy to create custom labels for a special edition brew. This year celebrates one of Scuttlebutt’s employees, Matt, who requested that they make Mateo Loco, a hoppy Imperial Red Ale.
Inspired by La Lotería, luchador masks, and vintage movie posters, this label reimagines the special anniversary brew as El Mateo Loco, the ghost of a famous wrestler who drowned at sea. His strong spirit (and high alcohol content) will drive you mad.
The front of the label stands out on the shelf with its use of custom lettering, bold illustration, and subtle textures. Wavy, watery letters reference both horror films as well as the brewery’s nautical name. Hand-rendered elements reinforce Scuttlebutt’s identity as a small, family-owned business.
The bright colors and spirited graphics lend themselves well to other applications, such as promotional posters, coasters, and commemorative pint glasses.
